More Precious Than Rubies: A legacy of mothers

On April 1, 2008, my mother stood before a room filled with women to honor her own mother—my grandmother, Mugs. I remember watching her speak with reverence and warmth, her words woven with memory and love. As Mother’s Day approaches, I find myself reflecting on that tribute, feeling the call to carry it forward. Not just as a son and grandson, but now as a husband and a father, I want to honor the

women who have built the foundation beneath our family, our home, and our business.

My grandmother, Mugs, was a rare and radiant presence in our lives. Proverbs 31 asks, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” She was exactly that. She represented the first generation of our family’s legacy—a woman of deep faith, unwavering devotion, and gracious hospitality. She stood beside my grandfather, Sam, in every endeavor—from selling hearing aids on the road to opening the restaurant that still bears our family’s name. She did not just support his dreams; she worked alongside him to bring them to life.

As a child, I knew her as the steady center of our world. Her kitchen was a place of comfort and joy, filled with the scent of spices and the warmth of her touch. She made everyone feel seen, welcomed, and loved. Even now, when I walk into Andria’s and catch a familiar aroma or hear the clatter of pans in the kitchen, I feel her presence. Her spirit continues to live in the meals we serve, the traditions we keep, and the care we offer to each guest.

While Mugs laid the foundation, my mother, Maureen, has been the one to carry it forward—quietly, faithfully, and with a strength that has shaped every chapter of my life.

My mom has always been a steady hand and an open heart. Through every joy and every hardship, she has been a source of unshakable love and unwavering support. When life presented obstacles, she was there—not just as a comfort, but as someone who rolled up her sleeves and stood beside me. Her encouragement has lifted me more times than I can count, and her presence has helped carry me through seasons of uncertainty.

As a grandmother, she gives that same kind of love to our children. They adore her, and rightfully so. She shows up—in the car line, at sports practices, and in all the small ways that make a big difference. She helps us maintain a sense of rhythm and balance in the midst of our busy lives and the demands of running a family business. Whether she is shuttling kids across town, filling in the gaps when schedules stretch thin, or simply making sure we have a warm dinner waiting at the end of the day, she anchors our family with quiet strength and unmatched devotion.

And now, I see that same spirit reflected in my wife, Rebecca.

She is raising our three children—one and a half, nine, and twelve—while balancing the many roles that make up her life. She teaches. She consults within our family business. She leads a business of her own. Her days are full, often stretching from school drop-offs to business meetings, and from sports games to bedtime routines. Yet she shows up, every single day, with grace and intentionality.

Rebecca is not just holding it all together; she is guiding us forward. She is helping us envision what the future of our legacy can be and is actively building the path to get there. Her strength is steady, her insight is sharp, and her love is evident in everything she does—from planning our next steps to making sure the little things are never overlooked.

Three generations. Three women. Each one unique, yet united by a shared strength and selfless love. What they have passed down is not simply tradition—it is a legacy of faithfulness, resilience, and purpose.

This Mother’s Day, I am filled with gratitude for the women who have shaped my life and continue to shape the lives of our children. For Mugs, whose legacy is our foundation. For Maureen, whose devotion continues to carry us. And for Rebecca, whose vision is guiding us into the future.

Each of them, in their own way, is more precious than rubies.

Thank you for the love you give, the sacrifices you make, and the strength you live out every day. We see you, we honor you, and we love you.

Happy Mother's Day from our family to yours!

-Max Kenison
